The Duramax is a 6.6-liter diesel engine that comes in 2001-2009 Chevrolet trucks. The fan belt on the Duramax diesel engine is a single belt, called a serpentine belt. The serpentine belt controls the fan, alternator, power steering pump and the air conditioner pump. The belt is routed around all of the accessory pulleys and is driven by the crankshaft. The crankshaft turns the serpentine belt around each of the engine accessories so they can function. Change the serpentine belt whenever there is excessive cracking or other damage present.

Turn the automatic belt tensioner counterclockwise with the 1/2-inch breaker bar. Pull the belt off the automatic belt tensioner pulley with your other hand.
