Your Chevy S10 truck's water pump is responsible for sending the coolant into the engine. If you don't replace a bad water pump, the truck's engine will eventually overheat. Changing the water pump in an S10 can be relatively simple compared to other smaller vehicles that have more components in the way. The process can vary, however, depending on the truck's year and engine type, so it's a good idea to talk with your mechanic.

Unscrew and remove the upper fan shroud, remove the nuts connecting the fan clutch assembly to the water pump using a wrench and remove the fan clutch.
